  1. Greek `image-breaker'. literally, a person
  2. who attacks religious images, originally in
  3. obedience to the injunction of the Second
  4. Commandment not to worship `graven images'.
  5. Under the influence of Islam and Judaism, an
  6. iconoclastic movement calling for the
  7. destruction of religious images developed in
  8. the Byzantine empire, and was endorsed by the
  9. Emperor Leo III in 726. Fierce persecution of
  10. those who made and venerated icons followed,
  11. until iconoclasm was declared a heresy in the
  12. 9th century. The same name was applied to
  13. those opposing the use of images at the
  14. Reformation, when there was much destruction
  15. in churches. Figuratively, the term is used
  16. for a person who attacks established ideals
  17. or principles.
